Automate a Restaurant Backyard Cells and Plot Expansion
Buy land in cells, upgrade what you own, and keep the kitchen supplied.
Backyard cells are the land tiles that turn a starter Automate a Restaurant plot into a real farm. The Roblox incremental sim from m_experiment (released May 25, 2026) starts you in a compact restaurant and asks you to buy backyard cells, then upgrade those cells, then fill them with seeds and beds. This guide covers when to spend on land versus seed upgrades, how cell levels change throughput, and how co-op groups avoid buying the same tile twice.

What a cell is
A cell is a purchasable backyard tile. Buying it unlocks more soil—beds you can plant, walkways drones can path, and sometimes room for storage crates. Upgrading a cell raises its level: more yield, faster growth, or extra plant slots depending on the current build. You do not need to memorize hidden numbers; you need a spend order.
Think of cells as the factory floor. Seeds are the raw material. Drones are the workers. A huge empty floor with no seeds is wasted cash. A crowded floor you never upgrade will also stall once customer volume rises.
Buy cells before you decorate
Early cash has three honest jobs:
- Keep seeds in stock so existing beds never idle (Seeds and Beds).
- Buy the next backyard cell when every unlocked bed is planted and you still run out of ingredients.
- Upgrade a cell only after the new tile is planted and you can still afford seed restocks.
Skip cosmetic kitchen pieces until those three are stable. Getting Started already warns against decorative expansions; backyard cells are the exception because they raise food supply.
Upgrade cells versus upgrade seeds
| Spend | Do this when | Stop if |
|---|---|---|
| New backyard cell | All current beds are planted and tickets still wait on crops | You cannot afford next seed restock |
| Cell level-up | The tile is full and harvests feel slow versus demand | You are about to unlock a cheaper adjacent cell |
| Seed level-up | The farm is full and one crop is the clear bottleneck | You are experimenting and may change that crop |
If you cannot decide, buy land. Empty potential is easier to fix than a maxed cell you cannot plant because you spent the seed budget. Rank seed cash on Seed Priority.
Pathing after you expand
Every new cell changes how harvest drones walk. After a purchase, walk the loop from farm to stove to serve counter. If the new tile sits behind a wall of crates, you created a maze. Production Line Layout is the page for aisles; apply it the same day you buy land, not a week later.
Leave a corridor the width of a player plus a drone. Co-op groups (up to about 10 players) collide in skinny backyard alleys and miss harvests.
Co-op buying rules
Shared restaurants make land purchases dangerous. One player can dump the till into a cell nobody asked for. Before anyone opens the shop:
- Name who may buy cells this session.
- Agree a cell max level so nobody pushes one tile to the cap while the rest of the yard is dirt.
- Skip unaffordable cells instead of camping the buy button.
Write the decision on the Recipe Checklist or say it in chat. Co-op Shared Restaurant covers the etiquette; this page is the land-specific version.
After you buy: fill, collect, automate
A new cell is not finished when the tile appears.
- Equip seeds and fill every new bed (Seeds and Beds).
- Pull the lever and empty storage so harvests have somewhere to go (Storage and Lever).
- Revisit Drone Priority—more land usually means you need harvest coverage before another cook drone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
When should I buy a new backyard cell?
When every unlocked bed is planted and customers still wait on ingredients. Do not buy land while existing beds sit empty.
Should I max one cell before buying the next?
Usually no. Spread plantable tiles first, then raise cell levels on the clusters that feed your best recipes.
Do backyard cells work in co-op?
Yes. Everyone shares one restaurant and one yard. Assign who may buy or upgrade cells so the group till is not emptied twice.
Is this the same as buying floors in Run a Restaurant?
No. That is a different Roblox game. Automate a Restaurant expands through backyard cells and production-line space, not that title's floor system.
